Perry is she is Chicago native who was birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) Her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. The parents of her were not keen to let her perform until she turned an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry states that she did not want to be an actor in high school but decided to take up playing as a way to make friends while at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she landed small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness brought Perry back to California, where theater jobs were readily available. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie alongside her in 2015. Perry appeared nine times in The Family, an ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. In 2017, she starred in a recurring role on her own ABC political thriller Scandal with her father. She was also cast in her role on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The role was selected through an audition, even having a strong association with it.
